Who Los Gatos suits best
Families who want top-rated schools without giving up a social life. Executives who want a real community, not a bedroom suburb. And international relocations in particular — if you’re moving from Europe and wondering where Silicon Valley actually feels like a place, Los Gatos answers that question fastest. The walkable village center, the farmers’ market, the summer concerts on the plaza: it gives a newly arrived family instant texture.
Commute reality
This is one of Los Gatos’s strongest cards. Apple in Cupertino is roughly a 15-minute drive — close enough that many Apple families treat Los Gatos as the default. Google in Mountain View runs about 25–30 minutes via Highway 85. Meta in Menlo Park is the longer haul, typically 35–45 minutes depending on where in town you live and when you leave. Most of my Los Gatos buyers accept the Meta commute in exchange for the lifestyle; hybrid schedules have made that trade much easier.
Lifestyle
Downtown Los Gatos is the real thing — Santa Cruz Avenue and its side streets hold serious restaurants, wine bars, coffee houses, and independent shops. The Los Gatos Creek Trail runs through town for running and cycling. Weekends mean hiking in the nearby open space preserves, brunch downtown, and easy drives to Santa Cruz or the wine country. The community skews established and engaged: school fundraisers, town events, and a genuinely active civic life.
Know before you move
Los Gatos is competitive at every price tier, and the premium for walk-to-downtown locations is real. Decide early whether you want the village (flatter lots, walkable, livelier) or the hillsides (views, privacy, larger parcels, winding roads). They are two different daily lives in the same zip code, and matching the right one to your family matters more than square footage.
